Welcoming Ramadan and Easter Dinner with Uniting Church

The Uniting Church of Vic/Tas and the Australian Intercultural Society shared an evening together in the spirit of unity in diversity on the eve of Ramadan and Easter. Marking the fourth iteration of their collaboration, a ‘Welcoming Ramadan & Easter’ dinner was the reason for the gathering.

In his address, Rev David Fotheringham, Moderator of the Uniting Church Synod of Tasmania and Victoria, set the tone for the evening by Reflecting on the challenging times faced by communities worldwide, Rev Fotheringham underscored the church’s commitment to peace, ceasefire, and the promotion of mutual understanding and respect. He emphasized the significance of Easter, a period of deep reflection on Jesus’ journey to the Cross, culminating in resurrection—a beacon of hope amidst adversity.

Ahmet Keskin, Executive Director of the Australian Intercultural Society, echoed Rev Fotheringham’s sentiments in his speech, emphasising the shared values of compassion, hospitality, and connection. He shed light on the spiritual significance of Ramadan, a time for reflection, devotion, and deeper connection with one another and with the divine. Ahmet urged attendees to transcend labels and embrace their shared humanity, reminding us that we share the same hopes and fears as each other.

The dinner provided an opportunity for attendees to engage in meaningful conversations, exchange stories and forge lasting bonds. As guests savored the culinary delights prepared by ASRC Catering, they embraced the spirit of inclusivity and solidarity.

In the midst of global challenges and divisions, events like these serve as beacons of hope, reminding us of the transformative power of dialogue, understanding, and unity. Through shared experiences, communities can overcome differences, celebrate the richness of our traditions and journey together towards a brighter future.
