Deakin University Iftar 2023

On Tuesday 18th April, Deakin University and the Australian Intercultural Society co-hosted the 12th Deakin University Iftar dinner at their Deakin Downtown campus. The event was was attended by students, staff, and members of the wider community. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Professor Fethi Mansouri, the Director of the Alfred Deakin Institute.

The evening began with recitation from the Holy Quran and a beautiful call to prayer performed by Deakin University Alumni Ahmad W Ghowsi. The soothing and melodic tones of the Quran set the tone for a peaceful and reflective evening.

The Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, Professor Iain Martin, welcomed the guests and acknowledged the significance of Ramadan to the Muslim community. He spoke of the importance of diversity and inclusivity at Deakin University and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting a culture of respect and understanding.

Following the welcome address, a timely panel discussion was the highlight of the evening on the topic of the Voice to Parliament. The panel consisted of Professor Mark Rose, Professor Gayle Sculthorpe, and Karen Milward, with Professor Greg Barton moderating the discussion. The discussion was informative and engaging, with the panelists sharing their perspectives on the importance of giving a voice to Indigenous Australians in the parliamentary process.

The evening ended with a vote of thanks and a gift presentation by the Australian Intercultural Society (AIS) Executive Director Ahmet Keskin.

The Deakin University Iftar dinner was a memorable event that celebrated diversity, inclusivity and community spirit.  Deakin University should be commended for hosting such an event and for its ongoing commitment to promoting a culture of respect and inclusivity.
