Courageous Conversations about Race™: Achieving Racial Equity in your organisation, your interactions and beyond
AIS was proud to be a partner of “Courageous Conversations about Race™: Achieving Racial Equity in your organisation, your interactions and beyond” held on Thursday 18th August 2022 at RMIT’s Capitol Theater.
The event was expertly MC’ed by human rights advocate and champion of diversity and gender equality Maria Dimopoulos AM. The event opened with a welcome to country by Uncle Tony who left guests with the message to listen to the voices of the past. Engage with them and connect with their stories and connection to the land. A panel titled “Achieving racial equality: What are the issues for Australia” which featured experts Chin Tan, Glenn Singleton, Nyadol Nyuon, Bwe Thay and was moderated by Teresa De Fazio captivated the audience’s attention as each shared their story about feeling a level of discomfort within society because of their race. Nyadol commented on being dragged into this space as she wanted to make a change so her children could feel more comfortable in society with their identity. .
Highlight of the day was Courageous Conversation workshop with internationally renowned speaker, author and founder of Courageous Conversations Glenn Singleton. The interactive session guided attendees through various aspects of how to internalise and work on what “one would perceive” as racism that is happening in all forms at workplace, structural hierarchy of decision making at Government departments and the corporate world. Everything has something to do with race so it’s about time we have conversations about race and through the Courageous Conversations tool kit allows us to have the right conversation.
Thank you to Courageous Conversation South Pacific Institute, EEON and Intersect Global Partners for bringing this special event to Melbourne – and to the partners with to ensure that the conversations continue within the right framework of respect with a view to understand the other.
